DIY / Upcycling: Sprucing Up The Garden With Plug Plants

I’m lucky enough to have a shared garden in the block of flats I live in, but I avoided it for the first three years as it was a mess and nobody seemed to want to take care of it.

But in the last year there has been a few changes of neighbours and now the block is full of families and single parents with young children and we have all started to use the garden and want to make it child-friendly.

The council have been asked many times to come and remove some of the rubbish that people have literally tipped into corners of it but unsurprisingly they haven’t bothered.

So I decided to do it myself with the help of another single parent who thankfully has some gardening experience as I have zilch!

I got some Garden Ready Plug Plants that I wanted to test out but I needed to find a soft bit of soil to dig them into. There was one section that had a huge, dead tree as well as lots of rubbish, weeds and muck which as you can imagine was a state (and I stupidly forgot to photograph it until we had cleared half of it!) and this looked ideal for the plants.

After a couple of hours of decluttering it and many bin bags lugged around to the front, we managed to have a rather lovely, circular section for the plants.

The randomly selected 60 plants were delivered in a box and all we had to do was pop them out of their individual boxes and pat them into small holes we dug out for them. So much easier than I imagined, and it meant that Chunk could help me do some digging and we are planning to create a little section for him and the other children in the block that they can dig up and play with.

It rained overnight so I didn’t even have to water them and I cannot wait for them to start growing.
The next plan is to find some shrubs or lavender to put in the middle of the plants and to target some other areas of the garden that need weeding and brightening up.
