Tips For Saving Money Around The Home

Saving money is something I always read up on because like a lot of working single parents, I’m broke most of the time!

I thought I would share some of the ideas I have picked up during the last three years of living on a very tight budget.

Money Saving Tips

Use A Food Bank

I’m not ashamed to admit that last year things got so difficult that I used a food bank. They are an amazing resource and one that a lot of families rely on.

Each food bank has different criteria, which are usually in terms of checking your income and what benefits you are on, but if you are eligible I would urge you to use them.

They are a great resource and I remember each week I would not only get the basic necessities such as pasta, bread, milk but also foods that we had never tried so we could had the fun of trying new things!

Paperless Billing

Energy companies tend to give discounts to customers who use paperless billing so always worth doing!

Turn Things Off, Don’t Leave Them On Standby

I hate leaving things on standby for fear of overheating anyway, but aside from that there’s also the cost of electricity that can be reduced by switching off at the mains.

Free Activities

I love the summer because there are far more free things we can do, including parks and beaches. Chunk and I can spend all day long at parks with friends and not spend a single penny as we take lunch and snacks with us.

During winter I try to look for free playgroups and have found quite a few through my local children’s centre.

Batch Cook Meals

Something I need to get back into doing. Not only does it save time each week but it also means you are more prepared, stretch your food out to last and reduce the risk of buying extra ‘ready meals’ during the week when you haven’t got time to cook.


Frozen Veg

Frozen vegetables have just the same nutrients as fresh but they tend to be cheaper and they don’t go off in your fridge!

Combimate

Combimate is provides protection for your pipes, appliances and your boiler. It ensures your water heating system remains efficient which in turn helps to keep energy costs down. It also helps to maintain your boiler, which can reduce the need for expensive repairs or replacements.
