Gift Idea for Nanny: Pocket-Sized Gardens

Mother’s Day isn’t just for mum in my family, as I enjoy giving cards and gifts to all the females in my family, especially my nan.

As you know from my Mother’s Day Gift Ideas post, I’m so bored of the standard mug, flowers, chocolates and teddy bear gifts, and have done a lot of research to find more memorable presents. After much searching, I’ve now managed to find something my nan will enjoy; Seedbombs.

My nan was a florist early on in her career, and ever since I was young, I’ve watched how much she loves flowers and plants- when I attempted to keep pot plants and even a bonsai, nan would always end up nursing them back to health for a few weeks after their near-death experiences!

Each year I tend to get her flowers or colourful pot plants, so when I came across these fab seedbombs I knew they were something new for my nan to get her teeth into.
Josie Jeffery is the mastermind behind making seedbombs using an ancient Japanese technique. The bombs are pocket-sized gardens in the shape of little balls, which contain everything needed to grow a plant.

Josie makes a range of seedbombs, from Mother’s Day ones to gorgeous, personalised wedding favour bombs. There are even seedbombs for car parks and wasteland, with the idea being that you throw them onto the wasteland, and they will then grow and make the area look a lot more attractive!

I love this idea, because I can imagine lots of children would love to spend Mother’s Day finding places to throw their seedbombs in their garden or local area, and then following their progress; Apparently some will grow within one week, whilst others can take a few months or even a year.

I contacted Josie and she was kind enough to send me the Mother’s Day seedbomb to try out, and to be honest I’m very impressed with the thought and effort that has gone into it, from the individually wrapped seedbombs, to the biodegradable (but still cute) packaging.

The box contains 6 wildflower seedbombs, each containing up to 100 seeds, as well as instructions and details of the plants. The plants include Red Campion, Ox Eye Daisy and Corncockle.

Once they have grown, these flowers are a food source for wildlife, as they provide nectar and seeds for birds and small mammals. As well as being thrown onto wasteland, they can also be put in pots or window boxes, which I think is far more up my nan’s street!

There was even a bottle top sprinkler included in the box, which attaches to screw cap bottles to become recycled watering cans. I think this is so cute, and Chunk will definitely love using this in the summer!

I really like this gift, as it’s something I’ve not seen before, and it’s encouraging people to improve their local landscapes.
