Reading is something I adored as a child, and still do (I just don’t get much time for it these days!), so I thought I would have a round up of some good children’s reads and also give them away to you lovely people! Toddlers The Hooba Looba, by Chris Kay This is definitely a favourite with Chunk, to the extent that the first night we opened it, we had to read it three times before he would go to sleep! It’s about a creature called Hooba Looba, who only comes out at night, and his job is to look after the animals, clean the stars in the sky, and even polish the moon! The book is written as a poem, and Chris even illustrates this beautiful book. It’s the perfect book for bedtime because of its storyline, and I find that reading a poem slowly is a brilliant way of getting Chunk to settle down for the night. The only slight criticism I have is that some sentences either have too many longer words, or words that don’t add to “my flow” when I’m reading it slowly. But I just omit the words or change them to shorter words, and it works a treat! I totally recommend this for any child that is starting to enjoy bedtime reads with their parents. The idea of a creature looking after the outside whilst they are asleep is probably quite comforting to them, so great for those who are having nightmares about monsters! Buy it here. Primary School Children The Bankrupt Tooth Fairy, by Carolyn Mandache This clever little book encourages children to keep their teeth healthy, as it follows Sparkles the tooth fairy, and her experiences with finding bad teeth. Sparkles talks about how to keep teeth clean, and how tooth fairies don’t want to collect rotten ones. There is even a cute checklist at the back by the tooth fairy, listing what needs to be done to help give the fairy a healthy tooth. It is written in rhyme which adds to how easy and fun this book is to read. The only thing I wasn’t keen on was the girly design, as I think the text is great for both genders, and boys need encouragement to keep their teeth clean just as much (if not more so) than the girls! Secondary School Children Rise of the Shadown Stealers by Daniel Ingram-Brown When I first saw this book, I thought it would be every young teens dream, but as well as this, I was pleasantly surprised to see it is a great read for us adults too! Like a lot of children’s films, it has two layers; simple meanings for children to understand, but at the same time an adult storyline that the children won’t pick up on. For the teens, they can enjoy the good vs. bad, whilst the adults get to look deeper into things- Dan enjoys writing about spirituality, and you can clearly see that in this book! Buy it here.
