The 2 Year Developmental Check

21st March 2014
Chunk had his 2 year check yesterday, so thought I would let you know what it involves in case your little one is approaching theirs too!

After a rush out of the flat to get there on time (I’m rarely on time anywhere these days!) I realised I’d left his water bottle at home, and that’s not something you want to do in front of a health visitor! I was honest though, and she didn’t seem phased, and I now get how scary some parents must feel when being around me in my social work role!

The room had lots of toys spread out, and I quickly noticed there were certain toys chosen in order to see if Chunk could interact or use them properly, as he should at this age.

Unfortunately Chunk was teething and had the sniffles, so was not on full form, and he seemed to spend half an hour standing behind me, stroking my hair, which is very unlike him. But thankfully, with much persuasion by me and the HV, he started to sit down and play with the toys.

Whilst he played, she asked me questions:

Is he now saying at least 50 wordsYES

Can he string a few words together now...YES- ‘Go Away Mummy’ and ‘Get Up Mummy, Eat!’ are his current demands (aka sentences).

Can he drink from a cupYES but also enjoys tipping it all over his food some days

Is he climbing, jumping, running around okHELL YES

Does he eat a varied dietYES the boy, like his mumma, can eat for England, but thankfully he eats a lot healthier!

Does he play with other children when in a groupYES when in a good mood, but he can also hit them, throw toys at them, or completely ignore them if he is unwell, tired or teething.

And a few more questions like that. His weight and height were measured, and she confirmed he is still on 91st centile for height so it is a perfect curve, and his weight is also just right, if not a tad under, as it’s on 75th centile. I took great pleasure in hearing this, because my sister calls my son a fatty all the time, to the point where I do worry that he is overweight. The HV looked surprised at me when I said this, and she reassured me that he is perfect for his height.

I asked about potty training, as he is now at the point where he is using the potty of his own accord (in the evenings) but I have not yet started any formal training. I did look into potty training a while ago, and chose a great potty and travel potty that have been around the home ever since, but the actual training still fills me with dread.

We decided I will start it in a few weeks time when the warm weather is in full force, as he has to spend most of the day without nappies on, to roam free! No doubt I shall be writing a lot about that very soon…

She started to talk about finding activities for him to use his hands and fingers with, but I explained I am already doing things such as using homemade playdough, colouring and brick building with him in order to strengthen his hand and finger muscles, to get them used to handwriting when he’s slightly older.

She was pleased about this, and ended the session by giving me some leaflets on home safety, and telling me that I should be very proud of myself, as he’s “a lovely, clever little boy”. Takes after his mumma that’s why!

So Chunk passed with flying colours, as I knew he would, and for once I felt like I was an okay mummy after all!

Well done you, and well done chunk! It is so easy to doubt yourself isn't it but you do a bang up job (and also now I've met you I saw it for myself!) However, potty training…. good luck!! x

Go Chunk congrats on a 2 year check! That's fantastic. Love the questions or rather your answers. lol So funny. I remember Buba's 2 year check as it wasn't that long ago. As parents we want them to preform their best and Buba was not feeling well and hiding behind me too, while Missy Moo jumped all over me. It was an experience for sure. What a tall boy you have 91st per. I wouldn't worry about his weight I was the fattest baby you ever saw then at four I ran around and was super small as a child. Everyone comments how chunky MM is getting because Buba has always been super skinny. I try to ignore them. Sometimes I start thinking oh no… but she isn't walking or crawling yet. lol Thank you so much for joining in Share With Me this week. Love your posts and getting to know more about you and your family on your lovely blog. #sharewithme

Oh I read this with a great deal of nostalgia. I was the single parent of a clever (sometimes too clever) big boy and remember worrying about pretty much everything. He is now a fully grown still clever still big 22 year old about whom I still worry most of the time. He is and has always been a joy to me though x

Well done Chunk and a really useful post for us as our Little Miss turns two next week. Although round our way the health visitors seem to have a constant backlog so not sure when we'll get our appointment through – she was 14 months before she had her 12-month check! #WotW
