6 Tips for Getting the Garden Ready for Summer

28th June 2016
Gardening doesn’t come naturally to me, so for those of you in the same boat I’ve got six tips for you when sorting out your garden for this summer. Hope they are of use!
Tips for Getting the Garden Ready for Summer

1. Keep It Simple

Don’t try to recreate the botanical gardens, stick with small, simple changes. It’s much easier to complete smaller tasks which keep your motivation up, rather than setting yourself a mammoth task and feeling rubbish if it doesn’t get finished for summer.

Small changes can make huge differences. This can be adding a couple of colourful shrubs in a dull corner, or spraying flower pots / tiles to transform them. I used Rustoleum spray to revamp some tiles last summer and that ten minute job really transformed that plant bed.

2. Love Your Lawn

Make sure you cut it regularly and if there are patches that are dying off you can get grass seed from your local garden centre. Rake away any dead grass and use moss killer where needed.

3. Edge It Off

It’s crazy how creating a simple edge border for your grass can completely transform your garden. It makes it look neat, tidy and much more attractive. You can edge off your garden in simple squares or create interesting shapes and whenever you’re bored of the shape you can reuse The Plastic People’s edging and theirs is also flexible so it can be bent into curves.

I don’t like harsh square corners, so want to add curved edges to my garden. I’m also considering bordering an area just for Chunk and his friends where I could spray the edging to be multi coloured.

4. Power Washers Are Your Friends

Power washers are great for cleaning decking, patios and children’s outdoor toys. They are so much quicker than old-fashioned scrubbing brushes and soap and I’m a great fan of saving time and effort where I can.

5. Upcycling

As you know I love upcycling furniture as I can transform my home and garden without having to spend lots of money on brand new things.

You can buy outdoor paints for metal and wood surfaces, so I plan to paint the shed in various pastel shades as well as the wooden bench we have.

6. Get The Kids Involved

Chunk may only be four, but he loves helping in the garden, from pulling out weeds to watering the flowers. Gardening can be made fun, and when it’s fun your kids will help ease the workload. I cannot stand bugs so if I spot them whilst weeding I know Chunk will pick them up and move them elsewhere for me as he loves them!

Love your tips! We plan to do a major over-haul of our garden too. Like you, would also love to upcycle garden furniture, especially since we don't have a big budget ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully, I'll find good stuff to re-do ๐Ÿ™‚

Lovely tips! I'm not sure it's possible for me to enjoy power hosing – I find it very hard work and filthy! ๐Ÿ™‚
