DIY / Upcycling: My Small Hallway Table (Rustoleum)

4th October 2014

Upcycling some chest of drawers for Chunk last week with Rustoleum products has really inspired me to carry on upcycling other furniture in our home . I’ve already completed another project in just a couple of evenings whilst watching my soaps and thought I would show you!

I have a small table in my hallway which is used as a dumping ground for Chunk’s nursery bag, coats and his shoes, so you can imagine what kind of state it’s in, so I decided to experiment with it.

And here’s what I managed to do:

I’m SO Proud of my Table!

Like it? I initially wanted to cut out all of the different postcards from the wallpaper and spread them around the top of the table, but due to this only being my second-ever project I didn’t feel confident enough to make it look good, so I opted to do a simple square panel, and I then decoupaged a couple of the little sections by ripping up wallpaper and sticking it like a collage.

If you want to try something similar, here’s how I did it:

Tutorial

1. Sand down your piece of furniture.

2. Apply the Antique White Chalk Paint by Rustoleum, leave it for an hour and apply another coat if it needs it.

3. Make some paste using PVA and water, with a ratio of 50/50, or 75 PVA/25 water if you prefer.

4. Cut the wallpaper sample into the desired shape, glue it and stick on.

5. Gently smooth away any air bubbles whilst it’s still wet.

6. Rip up pieces of wallpaper and glue each bit onto other areas of the table, and then coat the whole lot in the PVA to seal it.

7. Once dry, use Rustoleum Furniture Wax to wax the parts of the table that don’t have paper on them.

8. Once wax is dry, coat the entire table in Rustoleum Clear Sealer.

That looks fabulous! I might have to investigate that paint stuff, I've never tried anything like that though.

How clever! Must admit I have never tried to upcycle myself. There is a little shop close to where I live where you can take your furniture and they will upcycle it for you! That is lazy though and it looks more fun to do it myself!

Wow, that looks amazing & it is such a great idea. If you have an old dining table dont replace it, just do the same process, cut out the headlines etc from newspapers of birth dates, adding some new born pics.
